Fenugreek
Fenugreek one of the key ingredients in Mens ProFormance™, the standardised (50% saponins) extract from the Fenugreek plant in clinical trials has been shown to support healthy testosterone levels, healthy sexual function and healthy muscle mass.
Fenugreek has been used for thousands of years. It was used as an aphrodisiac by the Ancient Egyptians as well as being combined with honey for rickets, diabetes, dyspepsia, rheumatism, anaemia and constipation. (1) In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) it is used for kidney problems and conditions affecting the male reproductive tract. (2) Early Greek and Latin texts referred to it being used for hyperglycaemia and the Yemenite Jews used it for type 2 diabetes. It is widely used today as a food and medicine in India, China and the Middle East. (1) In herbal medicine today the plant is used to support blood sugar regulation, ulcers in the gut, pain and cholesterol balance, and to target the function of the immune and digestive systems.
In animal studies Fenugreek has been found to protect the testes from chemical induced damage, this effect being attributed to its potent antioxidant actions. (3) It has also shown potent prostate protection (anti-tumour activity in prostate cells). (16)
Other research on Fenugreek has shown it supports healthy cholesterol levels and blood sugar levels, (1) as well as supporting the body in times of debility and illness. (4)
Grapeseed extract
Grapeseeds are a potent source of antioxidants known as proanthocyanins. These active antioxidant compounds have many actions to enhance health and wellbeing by actively scavenging free radicals and other damaging compounds within the body. Ageing, generally speaking, is the result of oxidation and damage within our cells. As well as anti-ageing, Grapeseed extract promotes healthy cognitive functions and cardiovascular health. (1) Grapeseed extract has also shown interesting results to support prostate health (5) (reduce prostate cancer).
Antioxidants also protect the Leydig cells (cells that produce testosterone in the testes) from damage. In a rat study, after receiving testicular damaging compounds, the rats reproductive system was significantly affected but administration of Grapeseed extract ameliorated these changes by protecting the testes. (6) Additionally, Grapeseed extract has aromatase-inhibiting action, thus reducing the conversion of testosterone to oestrogen – a good thing for maintaining healthy testosterone levels in men. (7) This aromatase reaction increases as men age or are overweight, especially if the weight is distributed around the middle.
Tongkat Ali
Tongkat Ali is an extremely popular herb in Asia prized for its benefits for mens health benefits. Its main action is to support testosterone production, improving blood circulation as well as energy and stamina. Human clinical research has revealed it has very promising potential for sexual health improvements.
Selenium
Selenium is an essential trace mineral. Unfortunately New Zealand soils typically contain low levels of
this mineral. Selenium’s main functions in the body include; antioxidant protection, cell protection, immune system and thyroid health. With regards to men’s health Selenium is needed for the synthesis of testosterone and to support healthy fertility by targeting sperm maturation and motility. Optimal levels of Selenium are associated with cardiovascular health, healthy mood and immune function and longevity. (1) (In a 12 year study in over 13 000 people optimal selenium intake was associated with a reduction in all-cause mortality and cancer mortality). (1)
Zinc
Zinc (1) is another essential trace nutrient that has a vitally important role in all cells. A deficiency in zinc may result in a generalised impairment of many metabolic functions including those involved with growth and development. Marginal deficiency and inadequate intakes are not uncommon. Zinc deficiency in men, may be indicated by the following symptoms; rash; frequent infections; poor wound healing; fatigue; low mood; night blindness; erectile dysfunction; and reduced testosterone. A reduction in Zinc levels can also be impacted by strenuous exercise or high temperatures inducing sweating. Men with gut problems affecting nutrient absorption, men with alcoholism or men with a vegetarian diet can also suffer from depleted Zinc levels.
Zinc has a huge affect on many enzyme systems in the body therefore it has an important role in almost every biochemical process in the body. To summarise it is crucial for healthy immune and neurological function, has important antioxidant functions and is essential for both male and female reproduction. In regards to men, Zinc is needed for the synthesis of testosterone and promotess a healthy libido as well as healthy motile sperm. (1) Zinc can also protect the testes from chemical damage thus protecting testosterone levels and sperm health (12) (rat cyclophosphamide study).
Panax Ginseng
Panax ginseng has been used by Chinese herbalists for over 5000 years for men’s sexual health immune resistance, vitality and energy. It’s adapatogenic properties are prized for its effects on supporting the body during times of stress, exercise and the demands of modern living.
Vitamin D
Vitamin D is an essential nutrient, and refers to several fat soluble variations known as D2 and D3. It can also be manufactured in the body by sunlight (UVB) on the skin activating certain cholesterol type substances. Research on Vitamin D in the last few years has grown exponentially revealing new information on how essential it is for human health. It is even now thought of as a hormone due to its ability to interact with target tissue cell membranes. In New Zealand and Australia deficiency rates are rising due to the constant barrage of information on the negative effects of the sun on the skin, causing people to avoid sun (UVB) exposure resulting in inadequate Vitamin D levels. One Australian study found 70% of the healthy participants had suboptimal Vitamin D levels. Deficiency of Vitamin D is associated with; hair falling out, anaemia, fatigue, lower back pain, hypertension, poor blood sugar regulation, increased risk of fractures and infections, soft or brittle bones, cancer, autoimmune conditions and diabetes (1) as well as Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. (13)
Vitamin D receptors and Vitamin D metabolising enzymes are found throughout the male reproductive system including the Leydig cells where testosterone is made. Thus not surprisingly low Vitamin D levels are linked to lower levels of total and free testosterone as well as lower sperm counts and reduced sperm motility. (14) Low levels of Vitamin D is also associated with erectile dysfunction. (15)
